APRIL 2004

Firstly, it is important to point out that we do not employ understudies* as such but rather a system we have worked out with Equity whereby, at its simplest, we can employ one actor and one actress on each production whose role it is to read in for some or all of the male and female roles respectively in the event that a principal actor is indisposed. These actors are contracted on Equity Minimum payment to be at the theatre throughout each show for this purpose.
All actors we audition for Cover must be based strictly in the Manchester area for reasons of proximity. Our selection process requires actors with a certain amount of stage experience which equips them to deal with what can be quite a daunting, but exciting, experience. In the past five years since our Cover System was introduced, Covers have had to go on several times, sometimes at very short notice and sometimes for very demanding roles. We look for people who can deal with these situations calmly whilst retaining vocal clarity and a sensitivity to the rhythm and style of the production.
Covers are generally not part of the main rehearsal process. Their preparation begins by watching a run through in the theatre then joining the technical rehearsal when the play can be absorbed at a comfortable pace. No Cover is expected to learn the lines to be 'off the book' as we are not seeking to achieve the seemless integration of an 'understudy'. Observation continues through the week of the technical, dress rehearsals and previews. During the run Covers are encouraged to watch the show as many times as is necessary to stay familiar with it.
If you are a local actor with some stage experience and are interested in this system, please contact Jerry Knight-Smith in the Casting Department.

*except in certain circumstances when an overwhelmingly leading role in a production requires it.

We have temporarily suspended our 'cover' system due to financial constraints. This will be reviewed regularly.
