This Christmas Greg Hersov will direct Harold Brighouse’s tender comedy
classic, Zack. Written in 1920 Zack followed Brighouse’s most well-known
play, Hobson’s Choice.
A fable about how you live your life; materialistically or soulfully. Set in
a small rural town about a hundred years ago in the language and mentality of
people in the North West of England which in turn has an universality beyond.
Vibrant characters with an earthed, lived-in feel about them. A family business
that is in trouble, a mother holding things together with two very different
sons. Authentic actors of any ethnicity.
NB: Lancashire/Manchester accents throughout.
Mrs Munning – 55yrs old – Tough, practical, laconic mum who
is trying to keep life and business going with her two sons. No nonsense, but
we like her; not cold, she’s just had a cold way of life. An actress who
can drive the play. Cutting, dry humour.
Zachariah Munning (Zack)– 30-40yrs. He’s an eater and that
must be reflected in his appearance. Has internalised an awful lot of feelings;
waiting to be released by someone. A really special soul. Ingenuous but thoughtful
with a gentle wisdom. Has immersed himself in exactly the way he wants to live.
Loveable but with presence; very aware of what goes on around him. A volcano.
Paul Munning – 30-40yrs. Zack’s slightly older brother. A
man of business in partnership with his mother. Cutting, clever. A touch of
cynicism and stress. Slightly harassed. Driven. Knows the balance sheet. Unintentionally
comical in his drive and desperation.
Virginia Cavender – 25-35yrs. Takes care of her mother, living
in the city of Manchester. Troubled with a certain kind of maturity; a considerable
person. A city girl but more soulful than sharp. A watcher, not a show-off.
Has sophistication in comparison with the country folk. Vivacious and attractive.
A Viola.
Martha Wrigley – 20s. Barmaid. Hungry and available. Has a roughness
and a lived-in quality. Cunning and craftier than she seems.
Joe Wrigley – 50s. Character actor needed to play this rogue. Rough.
Unpleasant man with little redeeming/no charm. A father and a skilled odd-job
man looking for what he can exploit. An unreliable worker and a drinker.
Sally Teale – 20s. Smart and speaks up for herself. Seen as coming
from a fairly unfortunate place. Confident. Holds her own in her employment
– the cleaner and maid. Obviously holds a torch for Zack. Sharp and aware…
James Abbott – late 30s - late 40s. A country gentleman. Plain-speaking
and decisive. I know what I think and I know where I am in life sort of person.
A dominating presence.
Thomas Mowatt and Harry Shoebridge – 50+yrs. A double act but must
be contrasting. Deeply corrupt and prosperous farmers. Coarse; not city types.
Two very fun cameos.
